It's more about memories and things that have maybe been left unsaid to people I've lost track of in life. It's kind of recollecting and sorting through things. He even said, "Wow! It's so different leaving for tour when you have something at home."Ĭompass: Tell me about the title for the album, "Negotiations." Where did that come from?ī.S.: It's more of an introspective - a personal negotiation - not necessarily between myself and Benjamin or me and my family or me and any one person in general. Benjamin and I were just talking about this. Going out and playing, I'm much more conscious of the fact that I'm away from home and I'm away from something that is really really important to me. Now, I see it more as a letter you're writing to yourself or a conversation with your subconscious." Can you elaborate on that?īrandon Summers: That's especially true of "Negotiations," where the songs are much more personal songs - songs that are lyrically written a lot about - more and more - about two people that I know or knew in the past. Compass caught up with Summers to chat about the new album, being a father and memories of people in your past.Ĭompass: In press material, you're quoted as saying, "I used to view a lyric as a statement.
